Merry Christmas - The Ugly Cry

Last night my in-laws surprised me with the perfect gift. I cannot believe it! I have not received a gift this thoughtful in a long time. I also have not had one of these since I was around 6. I hate to show you this picture, but if you look really hard, you might see how excited I got.

I have been looking for a bike at thrift stores and garage sales for a while. I found a baby seat to attach to the future bike a couple months ago. Today my husband installed it. Tomorrow morning we are all due a nice bike ride.

My MIL is the hostess with the mostess! She is also a fine baker. Here are some shots of her beautiful cookies and her lovely display.

In Memory of Grandpa Sam

Today we had memorial services for my husband's father. We will miss him. Sammie was always one to say thank you. He also never held back on telling us how much we meant to him, and how much he loved us. I am thankful for the life of dear Sammie.

Here are my husband's words about his father from today's service:

Today, we gather to remember the life of my father, Sammie. He lived sixty-five years and twenty-eight days on this earth. His descendents include a daughter and a son, as well as four grandchildren. For most of my life, he was a weather observer for the National Weather Service. He could tell you the different types of clouds and how high up they were. He could fill and deploy a weather balloon, and he could track it with a parabolic dish at least twice the size of the satellite dish outside this church building. He knew a little bit how to play the guitar. He knew a little French, some Spanish, as well as a smidgen of Yupik Eskimo. He has lived in England, at least seven of the United States (including Alaska), as well as the Bahamas.

He taught me a great many things many of which have helped me become the great know-it-all that I am today. These include fundamental electronics, how a four-stroke engine works, and how a two-stroke engine works. He taught me the basic concepts behind nuclear fission, and how it compares to nuclear fusion. He explained black holes, pulsars, and other stellar phenomenon to me, as well as how things orbit the earth or the sun. He explained how metal detectors work, and how lie detectors work.
Incidentally, back when it was being drawn, “Calvin and Hobbes” was one of my favorite comic strips, but whenever Calvin would ask his dad one of those questions that little boys always ask their dad (usually regarding how something works), his dad would make up a crazy answer when he didn’t know the real answer (which was most of the time). I felt sorry for Calvin, because when I was a little kid, my dad, seemed to know everything that there was to know, and was pretty good at explaining to me anything I wanted to know. Considering what I do for a living these days, I am very grateful for his patient tutoring.

At times like this (with the death of someone important in our lives) most of us spend at least a little time pondering our own mortality. We might make a mental list of our accomplishments, and try to consider, to whatever extent possible, what sort of difference we have made in this life. Even for people who are not interested in the recognition or acclaim of their peers, most of us can’t help but wonder, at some point, and to some degree, if we have lived up to whatever potential we were born with. It’s times like this that I am grateful for the knowledge I have of the nature of that potential. I know who I am, why I am here, and where I am going. I know that I am a child of God. I know that I am here on this earth to receive a physical body, to make covenants with Heavenly Father, and most importantly, to help others. I also know that by following God’s plan of salvation, I can return to live with Him again. I also know that I have not seen my father for the last time. Thanks to the atonement of Jesus Christ, my father’s spirit will once again be reunited with his body, overcoming death. I don’t know how my father will spend his eternities; it’s not my place to judge my father’s life. I can’t say how his outlook may change once he realizes that his existence has not ended with his death. We are taught that everyone will get a true chance to accept the gospel, of Jesus Christ. I leave it to God to say who has had a chance in this life, and who has not.

I am thankful that I know my Heavenly Father, because I know that Heavenly Father is full of love, and not someone who is eager to condemn. He wants what is best for us.

To The Wonderful Women in My Circle

I got this in an email once, and it was so beautiful, I thought I would share it here.

When I was little, I use to believe in the concept of one best friend, and then I started to become a woman. And then I found out that if you allow your heart to open up, God will show you the best in many friends.

One friend's best is needed when you're going through things with your man. Another friend's best is needed when you're going through things with your momma.
Another when you want to shop, share, heal, hurt, joke, or just be. One friend will say let's pray together, another let's cry together, another let's fight together, another let's walk away together...
One friend will meet your spiritual need, another, your shoe fetish, another, your love for movies, another will be with you in your season of confusion, another will be your clarifier, another, the wind beneath your wings...
But whatever their assignment in your life, on whatever the occasion, on whatever the day, or where ever you need them to meet you with their gym shoes on and hair pulled back or to hold you back from making a complete fool of yourself... those are your best friends.
It may all be wrapped up in one woman, but for many it's wrapped up in several.. one from 7th grade, one from high school, several from the college years, a couple from old jobs, several from church, on some days your mother, on others your sisters, and on some days it's the one that you needed just for that day or week that you needed someone with a fresh perspective, or the one who didn't know all your baggage, or the one who would just listen without judging... those are good girlfriends/best friends.
Men are wonderful, husbands are excellent, boyfriends are awesome, male friends are priceless... but if you've ever had a real good girlfriend, then you know there's nothing like her!
I thank God for girlfriends, those who honor intimacy, those who hold trust, and those who just got your back when you feel like life is just too heavy!
I thank God for you. The special bond we share that's unique to us. The words we've shared. The prayers we've sent up. The laughs, the tears, the phone calls, the emails, the shopping, the movies, the lunches, the dinners, the late night talks, afternoon talks, the weekend talks, all the talking, talking, talking and the listening, listening, listening...
"I believe that friends are quiet angels who lift us to our feet when our wings have trouble remembering how to fly."

Year of the Dollhouse

A fellow Rower has a super idea. She is using her daughter's dollhouse to take time to connect with her. There is such precious little time left with our children when we they are really listening and trying to emulate us. She is using this year to foster homemaking skills and lovingly teach her daughter values of a good homemaker. Also, spending some real quality time with her. I was truly inspired by this, and have joined her on her journey for the next year. I will not be able to find something every day to put in the dollhouse, but I am sure I can find something at least once a week. I am excited to begin our journey.

To learn more go to Lynn's website and read about it. All posts regarding this journey will be labeled The Year of the Dollhouse. Lynn has several already. Ours will begin soon after Christmas. :wink: :wink:

The 12 Days of Homeschooling

(To the tune of “The 12 Days of Christmas”)
On the first day of home school my neighbor said to me,“Can you home school legally?”

On the second day of home school my neighbor said to me,“Are they socialized? Can you home school legally?”

On the third day of home school my neighbor said to me,“Do you give them tests? Are they socialized? Can you home school legally?”

On the fourth day of home school my neighbor said to me,“What about P.E.? Do you give them tests? Are they socialized? Canyou homeschool legally?”

On the fifth day of home school my neighbor said to me,“YOU ARE SO STRANGE! What about P.E.? Do you give them tests? Arethey socialized? Can you home school legally?”

On the sixth day of home school my neighbor said to me,“How long will you home school? YOU ARE SO STRANGE! What about P.E.?Do you give them tests? Are they socialized? Can you home school legally?”

On the seventh day of home school my neighbor said to me,“Look at what they’re missing? How long will you home school? YOUARE SO STRANGE! What about P.E.?Do you give them tests? Are they socialized? Can you home school legally?”

On the eighth day of home school my neighbor said to me,“Why do you do this? Look at what they’re missing? How long will youhome school? YOU ARE SO STRANGE! What about P.E.? Do you give themtests?Are they socialized? Can you home school legally?”

On the ninth day of home school my neighbor said to me,“What about graduation? Why do you do this? Look at what they’remissing? How long will you home school? YOU ARE SO STRANGE! Whatabout P.E.?Do you give them tests? Are they socialized? Can you home school legally?”

On the tenth day of home school my neighbor said to me,“I could never do that! What about graduation? Why do you do this?Look at what they’re missing? How long will you home school? YOU ARESO STRANGE! What about P.E.? Do you give them tests? Are theysocialized? Can you home school legally?”

On the eleventh day of homeschool my neighbor said to me,“Can they go to college? I could never do that! What about graduation? Why do you do this? Look at what they’re missing?How long will you home school? YOU ARE SO STRANGE! What about P.E.?Do you give them tests? Are they socialized? Can you home school legally?”

On the twelfth day of homeschool I thoughtfully replied:“They Can go to college! Yes, you could do this! They can have graduation! We do it cuz we love it! They are missing nothing! We’ll homeschool forever!WE ARE NOT STRANGE! We give them P.E. ! We give them tests! They are socialized! AND WE HOMESCHOOL LEGALLY!”

On the thirteenth day of homeschool my neighbor said to me,
“How can I get Started? Why didn’t you tell me? Where do I buy curriculum? When is the next conference? WILL PEOPLE THINK WE’RE STRANGE? I think we can do this … if you will help us, can we join P.E.? and we’ll home school legally!” ~ author unknown

I lied....It does not look like Christmas

It is 77degrees here today. It is Dec. 11 and it is 77degrees outside???? Days like this make me miss the Carolinas. We could count on some cold there. We didn't always have snow, but it definitely wasn't shorts weather! Here are some views from our house. You can see the trees still haven't lost all their leaves. They are getting there, just not quite yet. I guess it is still 11 days till Winter. But good grief, where is the cold? Also, my flower bed is beyond pathetic. Between the dog trampling it, deer eating it, kids throwing rocks in and this crazy weather, I am not sure the flowers know what is going on. There are supposed to be pansies and snapdragons and mums. It is supposed to be full of color. I guess green is a color. :eyeroll: It seems I will have to wait until spring for a beautiful flower bed again. Oh well, Happy Holidays!

Down Down the Mountain

We enjoyed Down Down the Mountain by Ellis Credle. This book is about an industrious little girl and boy from the Appalachian mountains who want a pair of shoes. They grow turnips to sell in town, but end up giving all of them away along the way except one. They end up entering their last turnip into a contest at the fair and winning. They win some money and buy the shoes they loved and gifts for their family.
Throughout our study, we learned about repitition and onomatopeias. We also talked about foreshadowing. Monkey is especially good at spotting foreshadowing in other books now. Really, all of these elements, but he likes the cleverness of foreshadowing.
Mouse discovered she loves raw turnips! She even took a page from Down Down the Mountain and shared some turnips with a lady we visited during the week.
We studied where the Appalachian mountains are, and some appalachian culture.
This was one of our favorite books. I am glad we own this one.

Extracurricular Activities

Mouse, Monkey and I are all in The Best Christmas Pageant Ever this year as part of our local community theater. We have learned so much about the production of a play. You would not believe how many people it takes to run a show. Props people, stage managers, directors, actors, lights, wardrobe. We are down to 2 more practices until we go LIVE! We will perfom seven shows altogether.

Mouse will be a little angel with the line: My daddy says there is no way I can be an angel!
Monkey will play the part of Hobie Clark. He gets to tell everyone that his dad doesn't have a bathrobe for him to play a shepard, and that his dad hangs out in his underwear. (Monkey thinks this is the best part of the play. LOL!)
I play the part of Irma Slocum a gossiping old bitty who second guesses every decision of the mom/director of the pageant. My favorite line? "You better nail down the church, and lock up the silver service, and hide the collection plates, before they clean them out!" Said about those disgusting Herdman children. Hysterical!!!!

One thing we learned is that acting is more than just knowing your lines. You have to believe that you are that person. You have to pretend you are really doing all those things and saying those things for real. Last night's practice was the first time I really "acted", all the other times, I was just trying to not forget my lines. It was a neat feeling. I may have to sign us up for another play soon. The kids seem to enjoy it. Mouse likes the singing, and Monkey likes the acting. We will see how we feel after 7 shows. Ha! Ha!

This is My Life Motto

See that ye love one another;
Cease to be covetous;
Learn to impart one to another
As the gospel requires.
Cease to be idle;
Cease to be unclean;
Cease to find fault one with another;
Cease to sleep longer than is needful;
Retire to thy bed early, that ye may not be weary;
Arise early, that your bodies
And your minds may be invigorated.
And above all things
Clothe yourselves with the bond of charity,
As with a mantle,
Which is the bond of perfectness and peace.
Pray always, that ye may not faint, until I come
Behold, and lo, I will come quickly,
And receive you unto myself. Amen.

Doctrine and Convenants 88:123-126

For a few years I have been working on living these words of scripture. Mainly focusing on the things it tells me to cease doing. I know this scripture well. I read it regularly. Tonight something stuck out.

Pray always, that ye may not faint, until I come. Behold, and lo, I will come quickly and receive you unto myself.

What a blessing that will be, when the Savior will come and receive me unto himself. These words brought me such comfort and peace tonight. I am so thankful for my wonderful Savior who loves me and comforts me. I am so thankful for the Atonement and the gift of prayer. I am thankful for all the little things I am blessed with each day. As I remember these things, I know that I can push forward another day until He will come to receive me.

It's Beginning to Look A Lot Like Christmas!

I have been making a huge effort to declutter and reorganize our school/living room. I have also been waiting patiently for the Desk Apprentice from Staples to go on sale. I have waited a very long time. Probably a year. Well, I looked yesterday, and not only was it on sale, there was no shipping!!! So, I grabbed it for my gift this year!

Well, Staples is in a class all to themselves on customer service and delivery! I got the Desk Apprentice today! We have already loaded it up with school supplies! The kids were so funny looking at the box and making sure we had all the necessary supplies in ours. Monkey was disappointed we didn't put any file folders in it. We may have to accomadate him.

I am so excited! I spared you all the photos from every angle. You can thank me later!
